Infrastructure

Accelerated the repaving of Carson St. & Clark Ave.

Traffic Calming

Worked with Los Cerritos Neighborhood Association on repairing the Bixby/Weston Traffic Circle

Over 500 Traffic Calming Requests that resulted in lowering speed limits across the Fifth District

Initiated Long Beach’s work toward an Automated Speed Safety System Pilot Program under AB 645 to improve traffic safety citywide

Worked and met with Orange Ave. residents to address the Orange Ave. Bike lane Project and rejected city staff recommendation of eliminating all parking on West Orange Ave.
Parks and Open Space

Willow Springs Park

Ushered in the long-awaited dedication of all 48 acres as park space in perpetuity

Working with Friends of Willow Springs and regional partners to secure additional funding for park improvements

Across the Fifth District and in all our parks, advocated for additional city funding for tree planting across all neighborhoods and parks to enhance urban forest

Worked with neighborhood associations on amenities for our local parks like: bike racks, new picnic benches, playground equipment, refresh community spaces, and more.
Long Beach Airport & General Aviation Concerns

Successfully fought to increase fine for noise violations with ongoing increases for inflation
-
Advocates to have in the City Budget the continuation of subsidies to encourage the use of the unleaded fuel available (Subsidies come from Airport Fund and not taxpayer dollars)

First Councilmember to meet with local advocates to address the General Aviation concerns

Called for comprehensive report around general aviation operations and flight schools at the Long Beach Airport

Traveled to Washington DC three times to meet with FAA to advocate for increased urgency in the efforts to eliminate the use of leaded fuel altogether...because 2030 is too long to wait
Public Safety and Fire Resources

Support Council Action on attractive incentive packages for new recruits and lateral transfers

Support the Accomplishment of city's 3rd back-to-back LBPD Academy increased funding to support additional rescue and paramedic assessment unit pilot program

Supported extending and strengthening Long Beach Fire Department’s Rescue 2 staffing program to improve emergency response
Housing

Worked with City Staff to have an emergency RV Lot Storage lot in the industrial area of the Fifth District removing them from our streets and neighborhoods

Broke ground on the Sunrise Senior Housing Facility off Los Coyotes Diag./Wardlow

Continue to advocate to City Staff and Non-profit housing developers to consider neighborhood feedback on future housing developments
Small Business Corridors/Economic Development

Support the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association in their ongoing community activations and business efforts

Led efforts to streamline event permitting processes for local Business Improvement Districts and neighborhood business associations

Supported small businesses through city processes to expedite openings and improvements

Work with Economic Development on supporting efforts for more activation at Norse Way and Parkview Village

Working with city staff and outside parties to activate and/or purchase vacant private properties

Advanced stronger code enforcement measures to address blight, vacant lots, and neglected storefronts
Keeping residents informed

Meets regularly with neighborhood leaders, whether they lead formal neighborhood associations or simply gather their neighbors on their block to discuss hyperlocal issues

Host monthly community meetings alternating between Wardlow Park and Expo Arts Center, bringing City Staff to residents

Since Jan. 19, 2023 has maintained a weekly e-newsletter informing residents on all the happenings across the Fifth District and City

Since taking office the Fifth District Team has handled over 9,000 unique cases via email/phone/or visits to the Wardlow Park Field Office

Table at community events across the district to allow for interactions with residents during non-traditional hours
Legislative Actions

Feasibility study to draft an ordinance to establish buffer zones for smoke shops and smoking lounges around sensitive receptors like schools, libraries, parks, and senior facilities
- Represented Long Beach in Washington, D.C. advocating for federal partnerships and investment opportunities for the city

Called for comprehensive infrastructure and emergency response reviews following major water main breaks and boil water notices in Long Beach

Supported a pilot program exploring safe shared e-scooter use on the Beach Bike Path

Advanced planning efforts for future skate parks and expanded recreational opportunities for youth and residents across Long Beach

Authored legislation officially recognizing Harvey Milk Day and LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Long Beach, including adoption of the Progress Pride Flag at Civic Plaza and City facilities

Advanced efforts to improve LGBTQ+ health equity through collection and reporting of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) data

Every year, recognized National Banned Books Week in Long Beach and affirmed support for intellectual freedom and access to information

Championed expanding access to Long Beach Public Library’s Libby digital services to broaden access to books and educational resources

Initiated updates to Long Beach’s outdated “House Numbers on Curbs” ordinance to improve enforcement, neighborhood standards, and emergency visibility
